Mould under a house forms mainly due to moisture buildup. When water collects in the subfloor and stays there, mould begins to grow. Sydney's climate, with its humidity and rainfall, increases this risk.
Moisture can come from different sources. For example, leaking pipes, rising damp from soil, or rainwater entering the subfloor area. In addition, blocked vents reduce airflow, which keeps the space damp.
Another common cause is poor drainage around the home. When water pools near the foundation, it slowly moves into the subfloor. Over time, this creates the right conditions for mould growth.
Timber structures also play a role. Wooden beams and joists absorb moisture easily. Once wet, they become a suitable surface for mould spores to settle and grow.
